Using Email Aliases for Application Testing
This SOP outlines how to use email aliases to efficiently test multiple accounts in applications without creating numerous email addresses.
Scope
This procedure applies to all team members involved in application testing, quality assurance, and development.
Procedure
Creating Email Aliases
- Identify your base email address (e.g., user@lowcode.agency)
- Create aliases by adding a plus sign (+) followed by any suffix:
- Format: username+suffix@domain
- Example: user+tester01@lowcode.agency
Example Implementation
When testing an application that requires different user roles, for example:
- For admin accounts: username+admin01@lowcode.agency
- For teacher accounts: username+teacher01@lowcode.agency
- For student accounts: username+student01@lowcode.agency
Important Notes
- All messages sent to these aliases will be delivered to the base email address
- This method works with most major email providers (Gmail, Outlook, etc.)
- You can create unlimited aliases with a single email address
- Use consistent naming conventions for better organization
Benefits
- Eliminates the need for temporary email services
- Reduces email account management overhead
- Allows efficient tracking of which application/role triggered specific emails
- Simplifies password recovery and account verification processes
Documentation
Maintain a spreadsheet of aliases used for each application to track testing accounts.
